“Here for them no matter what:” BBH Board’s Support Stays Strong Throughout Pandemic

The Bailey-Boushay House (BBH) board has always been a driving force behind the organization’s work. Despite having kids at home, changes at work and countless other variables throughout the pandemic, this team has continued its support and helped the organization navigate the challenges of COVID-19.

“We start each board meeting with a rundown of what was accomplished in the prior quarter — and it never ceases to amaze,” says Board Member Corneil Vacirca. “As a board member, I'm here for BBH no matter what. Sometimes that means cheering and advocating for all of the great work they do. If they need extra hands or funds or love, I'm here for that too.”

In non-pandemic times, the board’s role includes advocacy, philanthropy, engagement and strategic planning. That work hasn’t stopped during COVID-19. In 2020, they doubled down on fundraising efforts, helping donors rally support for BBH’s virtual Swirl fundraiser. That support was especially important this year, because of the added costs of pandemic precautions — which included running the shelter 24/7, serving some clients remotely, purchasing personal protective equipment and doing routine COVID-19 testing.

“When COVID hit, we were in uncharted waters,” says BBH Board Chair Brian Caven. “But fundraising efforts and community support enabled BBH to keep their community safe through all of this.”

A passion for BBH’s mission brings the board together, whether it’s in-person or over video call. They look forward to supporting BBH through their next chapter.

“Their care was amazing when I first started working with them in 2012, and now it's even more amazing,” Brian says. “I’ve volunteered with many organizations, but I find working with BBH really rewarding because their work is so cutting-edge — they adapt to whatever's coming. And walking through the halls and interacting with the nurses and the outpatients and the residents, you can see the difference that makes.”
