Each year, we invite the Virginia Mason community to celebrate Doctors’ Day, when patients share words of appreciation and donate to various programs to honor their healthcare providers. This year’s event will be on March 20, and after more than a year of the coronavirus pandemic, celebrating these folks is more important than ever.
Over the past year, doctors and nurses have rushed to the frontlines, while almost everyone else has stayed home. Care providers risked their own health to help COVID-19 patients and used tools like telemedicine to serve other patients from a distance.
“ALL the employees at Virginia Mason selflessly provide care and comfort during the pandemic,” says one grateful patient. “You all have families to care for, yet you report to work to help those in need. You inspire us with your courage and compassion. Thank you, thank you and bless you for your service!”
Cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses don’t stop because of a pandemic. Our care teams have found new ways to do what they’ve always done — from routine care via telemedicine to advanced procedures with new social distancing protocols — to keep our communities healthy and safe.
Doctors’ Day is a national holiday enacted by congress in 1990. In past years, doctors have received messages like “you gave me hope” and “without your expert care, I wouldn’t be alive today.” And these messages aren’t only for physicians.
“All the frontline workers – check-in, MAs, schedulers, RNs, housekeeping – you are special because, through it all, you have smiles, [and] you care so we as patients get what we need during appointments — thank you for all you do!” says another patient.
These words of gratitude mean the world to our team.
Donors can direct their Doctors’ Day gifts to their area of choice, including cancer research, heart disease care and COVID-19 rapid response. Donations make an impact across our organization, providing funds that help us continue to conduct leading research and offer the best possible care.
