Donating to Improve Complex Care

Susan Hanson has endured thyroid cancer, an autoimmune disease and several other serious health issues, so she knows how important it is for doctors with different specialties to be able to work together. Fortunately, Virginia Mason’s team approach breaks down the silos between disciplines, and encourages physicians to collaborate. This helps us provide world-class care for patients like Susan, and it explains why she’s been coming to us since 1978 - and why she and her husband, Roger, are among our most avid donors.

“They make working with multiple doctors easy,” Susan says. “It’s helped me stay healthier and happier, and I want to be sure that other people with multiple conditions can get the same great care.”

The Hansons have been donating through our Doctor’s Day campaign for over a decade. They recently honored one of Susan’s doctors, Tony Gerbino, MD, with a gift to our pulmonary medicine program. We used these funds to purchase a handheld ultrasound scope, which helps doctors make faster, easier diagnoses.

“Now they can do imaging procedures without the time and hassle of sending patients to other departments,” Susan says.

Susan and Roger also support Virginia Mason through IRA Charitable Rollover, which enables some donors to make tax-free donations via their retirement accounts. The Hansons know their donations help keep people healthy and they encourage others to follow their lead.

“Donations of any size make an impact,” Roger says. “Parking costs $10 per visit and a few small contributions can mean weeks of free parking — for patients who have frequent appointments and already feel the burden of affording care, small donations add up to a big difference.”
