Making Philanthropy a Family Tradition

Megan McIntyre and Hung Truong started a unique tradition for their son Beckett’s first birthday: A project called “Bs are for Books” where they invite friends and family to donate funds and books to Bailey-Boushay House (BBH).

“We wanted to create a tradition and foundation of giving back,” Megan says.

Now, they have two “bees” in the family — Beckett, now 6, and his little sister, Beatrix. And Megan and Hung have continued their tradition of celebrating their kids’ birthdays by encouraging their community to support BBH. This year, they also donated adult coloring books and coloring books for kids that BBH clients who are also parents can share with their children.

Megan and Hung, both pharmacists at Virginia Mason, have always believed in BBH's mission. Over the years, Hung has participated in quality improvement projects with BBH, which made the couple even more excited to support the organization.

“Seeing an inside picture of the organization makes me appreciate more than most how difficult this work is — and how committed BBH is to achieving their mission and maintaining the highest standards of care,” Hung says.

Their kids are still young and don’t fully understand the impact of this philanthropy. But Megan and Hung hope that as the kids get older, they’ll start to grasp the importance of giving back to their community and that small actions can make a big difference.

“We hope kids get a sense of community and empathy and learn that there are many different ways to make the world a better place,” Megan says.
