Towboat Invitational Comes Back in Full Swing!

The maritime industry has faced unique challenges during the pandemic: Transporting essential goods when the whole world was shut down. Dealing with backups that left shipping containers waiting days to unload. A block in the Suez Canal causing a global traffic jam. But maritime industry professionals were all the more excited to come together for the first time in two years for a long-standing favorite event: The Towboat Invitational Golf Tournament, which benefits Virginia Mason.

“It’s a big reunion of professionals in the maritime industry,” says Jeff Horst, vice president of sales and marketing for Foss Maritime Company, the tournament’s title sponsor. “Especially this year, people were really excited to come out to the event, see each other and support a good cause.”

Getting goods from point A to B requires a whole host of people: managers, engine mechanics, boat captains, hull cleaners. The tournament started in 2000 to bring these professionals together for a day of networking, fun and fundraising for a good cause. Since its inception, the tournament has raised $4 million for Virginia Mason.

This year’s event welcomed over 220 golfers to The Golf Club at Newcastle (with many COVID-19 precautions in place). Proceeds from the 2021 tournament will support Virginia Mason’s ongoing efforts to fight the pandemic.

“It was fitting and well-received that this year’s tournament would support COVID-19 relief,” Jeff says. “And we always know that when we support Virginia Mason, the funds we raise will go toward doing good in the community.”
