Maritime Industry Leaders Gather to Raise Money for Essential Care

On a sunny day in September, more than 300 people gathered at the Newcastle Golf Club to drive, chip and putt their way to winning the Towboat Invitational Golf Tournament. The 22-year tradition, hosted by the Foss Maritime Company, recruits people from around the country, representing all areas of the maritime industry, to gather and raise funds for Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH).

“At some point in life, everyone needs specialized healthcare. The doctors and nurses at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) have been giving essential care to people in our region for generations. I can’t think of a more important resource to support,” said Jeff Horst, VP of Sales for Foss Maritime and tournament organizer.

This year’s event raised an impressive $200,000, bringing the total funds raised over two decades to more than $4 million. Over the years, the tournament has directed gifts to the Floyd and Delores Jones Cancer Center, diabetes and cardiac care.

A few years ago, Foss leadership decided that the hospital should direct the fundraiser’s gift to where it is most needed. Since then, the event has been one of the largest contributors to the VMFH Fund for Greatest Needs. Each year, gifts from this fund allow VMFH to meet emerging needs around the hospital from equipment to technology and hiring providers where patients need them most.

One reason Foss supports VMFH is because of their shared values.

“Like VMFH, our highest priority is safety. Second, we really look at tailoring our work to meet the needs of our clients. Virginia Mason’s approach to care is driven by the patient experience. We’re glad to help the doctors and nurses at VMFH sustain that commitment,” Jeff said.

At the event, the 64 teams gathered and heard from grateful patient families who shared their medical journey.

“Many of us take our health for granted until we are sick or someone we care about is in need. The Foss team hopes their gifts can help reduce the financial burden on families and help more families get the care they need,” Jeff said. “This one event is something we can do to ensure access for everyone, exactly when they need it.”

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health’s Corporate Partner Program honors corporations and organizations that share our vision and commitment to building healthier communities and who, through their annual gifts, provide ongoing support for the communities we serve.
