At the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1990s, many organizations turned a blind eye to thousands of people who were suffering and dying from the disease. But John Oftebro, the CEO of Kelley-Ross Pharmacy Group at the time, personally made late-night deliveries to ensure patients at various care facilities got the medications they needed.
Getting medication to those in need is how Kelley-Ross, one of Seattle’s oldest pharmacies, and Bailey-Boushay House (BBH) first teamed up. The partnership has grown over the years; Kelley-Ross has been BBH’s pharmacy since 2006, providing medication for inpatients and outpatients.
Kelley-Ross not only supports BBH through meeting clients’ pharmaceutical needs, it also helps fund BBH’s lifesaving care through being a generous corporate sponsor. The pharmacy makes this commitment to BBH in part because their goals and mission are so closely aligned: Both organizations seek to provide the highest quality care, especially for those most in need.
“We support Bailey-Boushay because we see, every day, the tremendous impact they bring to our community,” says Ryan Oftebro, the current Kelley-Ross CEO. “This little building in the Madison Valley provides some of the most incredible, compassionate and transformative care that I have ever had the privilege to witness.”
The two organizations are constantly working together to find new ways to help patients. For example, Kelley-Ross and BBH were the first to bring strip packaging for medication to the United States — packaging that makes it easier for people to know which pills to take at what time of day.
“When our clients take their medication correctly, they can reach undetectable levels of HIV – but that can mean taking dozens of pills per day,” says BBH Executive Director Brian Knowles. “With Kelley-Ross’ help, we’ve made it easier to get our clients the medications they need, so they stay healthier and prevent HIV from spreading.”
Together, these organizations continue to make a profound and lasting difference for people living with HIV in Seattle.
